Intro
Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing an increasingly vital role in the shift towards a decentralized, renewable energy system. A substantial portion of CO2 emissions is generated during the use phase of these vehicles. To effectively reduce this impact, enhancing the transparency of charging sessions is essential. Achieving this goal requires close collaboration between various companies and industries to ensure a sustainable and efficient transition.
Over the course of our six-month co-innovation project, we have collaborated with experts from the energy and mobility sectors to enhance the transparency of carbon emissions accounting for EVs. Building on the foundation laid by the first phase of the project, REVEAL CO2 1.0, we conducted biweekly workshops and interviews with selected industry partners. These insights helped us develop our green charging registry Greenistry, addressing one of the key challenges in the area of public charging and emission accounting.
Problem Statement
Currently, there is a lack of transparency on the renewable electricity used during public charging sessions of electric vehicles. For providing regulators and customers with insights, fleet operators and OEMs purchase guarantees of origin proofing the amount of renewable electricity that is charged without CO2 emissions. At the same time CPOs also purchase respective documents to declare the amount of renewable electricity used at their charging stations.

Our Approach
We developed a market based approach that provides transparency on the procurement of renewable electricity. Therefore, a service provider collects respective documents from CPOs and provide OEMs and fleet operators with a verified brand specific certificate on the share of renewable electricity.

1. Data Collection: Collecting verified documents on the procurement of renewable electricity from Charge point Operators (CPO) to build the registry.
2. Matching: Matching OEM charging records with CPO entries and calculate the EU-wide share of energy that is backed up with entries from the green charging registry.
3. Reporting: Service provider evaluates the data and generates Brand specific reports of certified share of market-based renewable energy that can be integrated in your sustainability reporting.
4. Renumeration: OEM pays the service provider a fee for collecting and evaluating the documents in a certified process. CPO gets a renumeration from the service provider for uploading his certificates and updating the status on a regular basis.
